Dementia is a brain disease that causes multiple cognition disability as well as psychiatric and somatic dysfunction. Dementia is not a single disease and can be classified as progressive, preventable, and treatable disease. Treatment goals of the disease are to attenuate progression, to minimize cognitive and psychiatric symptoms, and to improve quality of life. Treatment options include prescription drugs, non-prescription drugs and supplements, and non-pharmacological options such as reminiscence therapy, nutritional therapy, music therapy, and exercise. Cholinesterase inhibitors are main stay of the treatment option although they failed to show evidence to revert progression of the disease. Community pharmacists should make every effort to assist the patients and care givers with various treatment modalities, especially with non-pharmacological treatment options. Pharmaceutical care service offered by community pharmacists may be overwhelmingly beneficial to not only care givers but health insurance and society.
