Heart failure is a disease that the heart is unable to pump sufficiently to maintain blood flow to meet the body's needs. Heart failure is classified either by New York Heart Association functional classification or a scoring system designed by American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association. Treatment goals of the disease are to mitigate uncomfortable symptoms and to enhance quality of life. Treatment options include prescription drugs, non-prescription drugs and supplements, and non-pharmacological options such as diet and lifestyle change. Rennin-angiotension system modifiers and diuretics are mainstay of the pharmaceutical treatment option. Recently, beta blockers are also increasingly used. Although there are numerous medications available for the management of heart failure, life quality of the patients remains very poor. Community pharmacists should make every effort to provide the most efficient pharmaceutical care option to help patient get to the treatment goal. Pharmaceutical care service offered by community pharmacists may be an invaluable resource for the elderly suffering from heart failure.
